This Country Report, Capturing Background Information Related to Gender-Based Violence Against Women Politicians<\/em>, was developed as part of the international project 3R: Recognize, Resist, Rise Up \u2013 Tackling Gender-Based Violence against Women in Politics<\/strong>. The project is led by a consortium of five European organizations: Women for Election Ireland (IE), EAF Berlin (DE), Mo\u017enos\u0165 vo\u013eby (SK), J\u00d3L-L\u00c9T Alap\u00edtv\u00e1ny (HU), and F\u00f3rum 50 % (CZ).<\/p>\n

The report summarizes existing research, data, and policies on violence against women in politics, and points out the gaps and challenges that remain.<\/p>\n

Violence against women in politics (VAWP) is a growing global problem<\/h3>\n

It undermines not only gender equality, but also democracy and the rule of law. In Slovakia, women in political life face high levels of harassment, abuse, and violence\u2014both online and offline.<\/strong> This abuse is often coordinated, with the aim of silencing, delegitimizing, and excluding women from politics. The result is a serious threat to equal representation and inclusive governance.<\/p>\n

The report looks at Slovakia\u2019s legislative, institutional, and social context around VAWP. It reviews laws and policies, national strategies, and political party responses. It also analyses research, public attitudes, and key case studies. Special attention is given to the role of media, civil society, and political institutions in either addressing\u2014or reinforcing\u2014this violence.<\/p>\n

The findings highlight major gaps<\/h3>\n

Slovakia has no targeted policies<\/strong> or institutions to directly address VAWP. Current laws treat such violence as isolated incidents, rather than as a gendered and systemic problem. Accountability is weak, especially when perpetrators are public figures. Harassment by political leaders or other public actors is often tolerated or ignored, leaving victims with few remedies.<\/p>\n

As a result, women\u2019s participation in politics is systematically discouraged.<\/strong> While media and civil society have helped raise awareness, institutional responses remain insufficient, and a culture of impunity persists.<\/p>\n
