Care crisis – Failures in providing sexual and reproductive health care and rights to female refugees from Ukraine.

Multiple overlapping and compounding barriers to accessing quality sexual and reproductive health care are having an alarming impact on female refugees from Ukraine.

We present a new study entitled Care Crisis: Failures in Providing Sexual and Reproductive Health Care and Rights to Refugees from Ukraine in Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia.

The new study, on which we collaborated with a group of nine local and international human rights organizations, documents the alarming impact that multiple, overlapping, and compounding barriers to accessing quality sexual and reproductive healthcare have on female refugees from Ukraine in these countries.

The report is based on more than 80 semi-structured interviews with refugees and experts in Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia, conducted between July 2022 and April 2023.

“Women are ashamed and afraid to talk about it… getting money for an abortion is a problem. Imagine you are a refugee from Ukraine, where the average wage is much lower than in Slovakia. That is a huge obstacle. The problem is that abortions are not covered by general health insurance.”
